About

Muez i Diin Street is an ancient trading road that runs the length of Islamic Cairo from the mosques of Al Hussain and Al Azhar to the bastion of Cairo Citadel.  Along it you’ll find artisans, grocers, butchers and clothes sellers interspesed with magnificent mosques, kuttab-sabils and former workshops called wikalas. You can even find Cairo’s last Tarbush shop.

It’s a street that captures so much of what is fascinating about the Middle East to newcomers.  Cultures and trades which have endured rubbing alongside the very latest modes of commerce, technology and consumption. This blog is dedicated to that atmosphere of life lived amongst practices rooted in the past.
